Title

‘1619 or 1776?’: Hamilton Forum on legacy of slavery draws protest

Subject

The Hamilton Forum organized a debate between two visiting scholars Leslie Harris and Lucas Morel regarding the founding of the country and the legacy of slavery. Harris argued that slavery was inseparable from America's history. Morel argued that while the United States was a slave-owning nation, the country was "not rooted in racial hierarchies and its founders intended an incremental approach to abolition". Some students took insult to the very premise of the debate and decided to protest the event.
