Title
Student Government Recommends Changes to Handbook’s Protest Policy
Subject
Following the protests against Charles Murray and the disciplinary actions the administration began taking against students involved, the SGA members found it necessary to revisit the wording regarding the right to protest in the handbook. SGA sought to change the college’s ability to discipline students or press charges, specifically, the college could press charges against “disruption” and SGA wanted to protect students’ rights to non-violent protest by specifically stating “violent disruption”. Furthermore, Travis Wayne Sanderson (Community Council Co-Chair) expressed his frustration with the hypocrisy of the disciplinary action taken against the disruption at the Murray protest, as opposed to the lack of disciplinary action taken at the Trump protest labeling the policy as inconsistent and vague.
