Title

Asian Americans Endure Racial Stereotypes

Subject

Student op-ed identifies the varying racial stereotypes and false perceptions that they have to endure, and how these correlate with biased attitudes, acts, and practices. The author addresses the "model minority" myth, as well as the antagonism toward the Asian-American community over the false idea that it is to blame for high American unemployment. Specifically, the author speaks about the microaggressions and experiences of racism that they have personally felt at Middlebury, as well as the underrepresentation of Asian-American students at the College, and the lack of administrative resources for students of color to report incidents of bias/harassment.

Coverage

"Furthermore, the lack of any clear avenues through which students can report incidents of harassment further compound the frustration many already feel."

"I stress measures to increase interaction between people of different backgrounds and races. And this is why I am concerned about the large underrepresentation of Asian students at Middlebury."

"I can only ask that both students and administration take steps in recognizing and addressing the issue... It has only been this year that Asian-Americans have been classified as a minority group in the admissions department. Thus, when the college speaks about increasing diversity on campus, I do not think we are given equal consideration as a minority group."
