Title

Committee suggests improved conditions for minorities

Subject

A report to the Community Council. The Committee to Enhance the Experience of African-American and Hispanic-American Students at Middlebury found five areas where the college could improve on: the creation of a major in African-American Studies with a set of courses that would explore the "cultural heritage of Hispanic-Americans," as well as the "establishment of a residential Bicultural Center." The criteria for residence in this center resulted in some controversy, because of its "intellectual interest and cultural background" requirement, as well as the recommendation that "African-American and Hispanic-American students be given priority for the rooms in the house". An amendment to this proposal was later added which makes no mention of student ethnicity in regard to membership in the Bicultural Center. The article also mentions the lack of "minority" tenured professors at the college.
