Title

Panthers, Indians Favored as Snow Sculpture Motif

Subject

In the 1954 annual Snow Sculpting Competition, as part of the Winter Carnival, many snow sculptures were made by various student groups that portrayed really derogatory/ offensive/violent imagery of indigenous peoples. They are referred to as "Indians" in the article. For context, one of the competitors in the Winter Carnival Ski Race was Dartmouth College. At this point in time, Dartmouth's mascot was an "Indian," but the depictions of "Indians" in the sculpture were not of Dartmouth Athletes-- they were a stereotypical image of what it was thought that an indigenous person looked like.
