Questions concerning race spur student insight
Subject
Racial insensitivity and cultural ignorance were highlighted in a Campus article that covered the musical performance of the Latinx music group Latyn Boyz. This article poked fun at the group in a tone-deaf way and heavily relied on stereotypes. This instance put focus on the culture at Middlebury in terms of racial diversity.

Coverage
"The high enrollment of international students raises the question of to what extent minorities should share their cultures with the rest of the student body, commented Alexandra Urena '00, 'The idea of being used to make this campus more diverse is almost an insult. The primary reason we are here is to learn."
"Gabriel Macias '99 agrees. 'There is a double-edged sword in dealing with this issue. It is hard to take a stand on the issue. I think that there is a strain on the minority students to be vocal here, but who is to say that they should go out of their way to share their culture.'"
"Kevin Murungi '01 said... 'For most people, it is at a point where you kind of take for granted that black kids are going to be treated in a different way, like with some kind of disrespect,' Murungi said. 'When stuff happens to a black kid it's kind of like so what else is new?'"
"In Proctor, blatant segregation is visible daily among the various tables that seem to have students only from certain backgrounds."
