Title

Editorial: Facing the African American Dilemma

Subject

An editorial that summarizes a decline in the number of African American students within the freshman class. The editorial also points to the fact that higher percentages of African American students will not be achieved solely through recruiting, but by creating a more inclusive culture for students at Middlebury. Additionally, the authors discuss the performative manner that the admissions office capitalizes on students of color in order to present as supporting racial diversity.

Coverage

"Honesty is also an important facet to retaining the African American students who matriculate. The 'new faces' for this year have two African American students displayed on the cover, with a total of five on the inside. The college catalog also has a disproportionately large number of African Americans pictured. These misrepresentations, small as they may seem, are important to those who come here. Visiting and spending a night in the Bi-Cultural Center with 15 minority students is not the same as arriving the first year and living in Stewart, where there may be only one other African American in the dorm."
