Mortar Board Queries Sorority Procedures

Mortar Board writes a letter to the editor to draw attention to the de facto discrimination in national organizations with affiliations at Middlebury, especially within the recommendation process within rushing. Calls for all members of the College to condemn this discrimination, as well as demands that all greek life organizations at Middlebury: "persuade its respective national to abolish any and all procedures which allow even a single one of its affiliates to practice de facto discrimination on the basis of race or religion." Also demands that all Middlebury greek life organizations publicize what procedures used by their national organization may result in discrimination, how the Middlebury chapter feels regarding said practices employed by the national organization, what the local chapter plans to do regarding said practices, and what the local chapter plans to do if the national refuses to change discriminatory practices.

"Certain Middlebury groups have an affiliation with a national system which requires a recommendation for admission. Although it may not always be the case, the recommendation system enables a candidate to be denied admission to the group because of a racial or religious bias on the part of the individual who writes (or refuses to write) the recommendation."

"We feel that Middlebury College cannot condone discrimination... Groups on campus which affiliate with national organizations, some of whose chapters employ such practices in order to discriminate on the basis of race or religion give tacit approval to such discrimination by their silence, inaction, and financial support. No member of the Middlebury College community can permit this situation to continue."
