Title

Governor Wallace

Subject

The Debate Club, which was sponsoring the talk given by Alabama Governor George Wallace, was assured by Administration that although "there were not officially condoning the event, the College would not interfere with the invitation" to Wallace. The invitation was declined by Wallace because the College was unable to procure him a venue to speak at. Mead Chapel was in the running, but Middlebury Chaplain Reverend Charles Scott refused to allow Wallace to use the space on the basis of his racist views towards Black people. The author of the article criticizes Scott's actions and argues that Wallace should be allowed to speak.

Coverage

"Governor Wallace advocates segregation of races, something that this newspaper detests with all the power of its editorial option. And yet we are disappointed with the decision of Chaplain Scott who, in a sincere effort as a man of high moral conviction, closed the Chapel doors to a man whose controversial options should be heard by anyone who wants to listen."
